How secure is your network infrastructure for handling VoIP?

The eleventh session in the National Webcast Initiative series took place on April 13, 2006. Over 700 individuals representing 12 countries registered for this event. The topic of the webcast was “Voice-Over IP ” with a featured presentation by Mr. Fran Raimon , Senior Systems Engineer, Global Systems Integrator Team, Juniper Networks and Mr. Bob Gaughan , Senior Consultant, Enterprise Regional Marketing, Nortel Networks, and Mr. William Pelgrin, Chair of the MS-ISAC .

 

VoIP is growing in popularity.   Two-thirds of the world’s 2,000 largest companies will be using VOIP systems in 2006 and by 2009, 27 million Americans will use Internet phones at home.  The presentation raised awareness on network security issues and challenges that arise in today’s network world.  We need to understand what the threats are and how to mitigate them.

 

The presenters walked through a variety of scenarios to help explain these concepts and provided specific advice on what steps to take which included:

  • Key Solutions to Securing VoIP Networks
  • A Secure VoIP Implementation

The Department of Homeland Security’s National Cyber Security Division and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) have partnered to establish the National Webcast Initiative to develop a series of national webcasts which will examine critical and timely cyber security issues. Embracing the concept that security is everyone’s responsibility, these webcasts will be available to a broad audience to help raise awareness and knowledge levels. A number of vendors have offered their services at no cost to government, to help develop and deliver the webcasts.

The National Webcast Initiative is also coordinated by the New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination(New Window) and the New York State Forum(New Window) .
