Wire-Free Does Not Always Mean Risk-Free!

The seventh session in the National Webcast Initiative series took place on July 20, 2005. More than 1,300 individuals representing 5 countries registered for this event. The topic of the webcast was “Wireless Security” with a featured presentation by Jean-Paul Boucher , Director of Wireless Integration Services, SRA International, Inc. and Bob Gaughan , Senior Consultant in the Enterprise Regional Marketing, from Nortel. Opening remarks were provided by Ms. Liesyl Franz, Director of International Affairs and Deputy Director for Outreach and Awareness, National Cyber Security Division, a Division of the US Department of Homeland Security, and Mr. William Pelgrin, Chair of the MS-ISAC.

The July 20th National Webcast applied to all computer users – whether using a wireless-enabled laptop at the local coffee house or running a network that hosts sensitive customer data. Attendees walked away with a better understanding of the diversity of wireless devices that are used today, the security that can be applied behind the wireless network, and solutions of how you can be more secure.

The Department of Homeland Security US-CERT and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) have partnered to establish the National Webcast Initiative to develop a series of national webcasts which will examine critical and timely cyber security issues. Embracing the concept that security is everyone’s responsibility, these webcasts will be available to a broad audience to help raise awareness and knowledge levels. A number of vendors have offered their services at no cost to government, to help develop and deliver the webcasts.

The National Webcast Initiative is also coordinated by the New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination(New Window) and the New York State Forum(New Window) .
