Tips During the Holiday Season
Don’t let the Cyber Space Grinch Steal Your Holiday!
Thursday, December 15, 2005
The ninth session in the National Webcast Initiative series took place on December 15, 2005. More than 700 individuals representing 3 countries registered for this event. The topic of the webcast was “Cyber Security Tips During the Holiday Season” with a featured presentation by Ron Teixeira, Executive Director, National Cyber Security Alliance, Steve Salter , Vice President, Better Business Bureau (BBBOnline), Sanjay Macwan , Director, AT&T Labs Security Center of Excellence, and Mr. William Pelgrin, Chair of the MS-ISAC.
During the holiday season, many of us use the Internet for our holiday gift gathering. Consumers need to be informed, not only about shopping online, but also about the computer products we purchase. Do you really know what the security settings are on the machine you just purchased—or received as a gift? Can you recognize a phishing email, so that you don’t take the bait and fall prey to the scam?
The broadcast presentation walked through a variety of scenarios to help explain these concepts and gave specific advice on how to protect yourselves, your computer and your family—not only just this holiday season, but throughout the new year as well!

The Department of Homeland Security US-CERT and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) have partnered to establish the National Webcast Initiative to develop a series of national webcasts which will examine critical and timely cyber security issues. Embracing the concept that security is everyone’s responsibility, these webcasts will be available to a broad audience to help raise awareness and knowledge levels. A number of vendors have offered their services at no cost to government, to help develop and deliver the webcasts.
The National Webcast Initiative is also coordinated by
the New York State
Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination
