National Webcast Initiative
~ Cyber Security: What Does the Future Hold? ~
December 14, 2006
The National Webcast Initiative series was held on December 14th with a featured presentation on Cyber Security: What Does the Future Hold? Over 500 individuals representing 3 countries registered for this spectacular event. Opening remarks were provided by Mr. William Pelgrin, Chair of the MS-ISAC, followed by the webcast presenter, Mr. Mark Fabro , Chief Security Scientist from Lofty Perch, Inc.
This webcast presentation provided a broad look at some of the major trends and challenges in securing computers, for home users as well as at the enterprise level. Some of the topics covered included the convergence of technology: as the convergence continues to increase, the capacity of devices, such as cell phones and other hand-helds is rivaling that of desktops. Do you know how to secure your cell phone/handheld to protect it from worms, viruses and other malicious activity? Do you know how to properly dispose of your cell phone or handheld when you are ready to buy new? Encryption technologies were also discussed, including a review of various options available and what the user should look for when analyzing options. This webcast also examined other new technologies and hot topics on the horizon for 2007 and what users need to know in order to be secure.

The Department of Homeland Security’s National Cyber Security Division and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center have partnered to establish the National Webcast Initiative to develop a series of national webcasts which will examine critical and timely cyber security issues. Embracing the concept that security is everyone’s responsibility, these webcasts will be available to a broad audience to help raise awareness and knowledge levels. A number of vendors have offered their services at no cost to government, to help develop and deliver the webcasts.
The National Webcast Initiative is also coordinated by the New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination
and the New York State Forum
