National Webcast Initiative:
Application Security
April 23, 2008
The second of the 2008 National Webcast series was held on April 23rd with a featured presentation on Application Security. Over 600 individuals representing 46 states and 5 countries registered for this spectacular event. Opening remarks were provided by Mr. William Pelgrin, Chair of the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, followed by Major Bruce C. Jenkins, USAF (Ret.) Security Practice Director with Fortify Software and Anthony N. Gerkis, P.Eng, Executive with Accenture Security Technology Consulting.
Heightened application security is a crucial component of any organization's cyber security strategy, particularly as more web applications are being developed. Attackers are finding more creative ways to take advantage of potential vulnerabilities. In fact, experts predict an increase in web application attacks in 2008.
Organizations, including application development staff, must have an understanding of the cyber security risks and threat environment to facilitate the implementation of strong cyber security at the development phase.
The presentation walked-through a variety of scenarios to help explain these concepts and provided specific advice on what steps to take for both organizations and the end user.

The Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center have partnered to establish the National Webcast Initiative to develop a series of national webcasts which will examine critical and timely cyber security issues. Embracing the concept that security is everyone's responsibility, these webcasts are available to a broad audience to help raise awareness and knowledge levels. A number of vendors have offered their services at no cost to government, to help develop and deliver the webcasts.
The National Webcast Initiative is also coordinated by the New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination
and the New York State Forum
