National Webcast Initiative:

Security 101 for Your PC

June 18, 2008

The third of the 2008 National Webcast series was held on June 18th with a featured presentation on Security 101 for Your PC. Over 800 individuals representing 47 states and 3 countries registered for this spectacular event. Opening remarks were provided by Mr. William Pelgrin, Chair of the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, followed by Mr. Lance Spitzner , Founder and President of HoneyTech and Ms. Barbara Chung , Security Advisor for Education for Microsoft Corporation.

Cyber security is everyone's responsibility and each of us should have an understanding of the basics of computer security and our role in securing the information and systems in our care. The amount of malicious cyber activity continues to increase. According to current estimates, some 40% of the 800 million computers connected to the Internet are part of a botnet, 94% of all electronic mail on the Internet is spam and the average survival time for an unprotected networked computer dropped from 20 minutes in 2004 down to just minutes today. Clearly, the threat landscape demands that we take proactive steps to protect ourselves and our systems.

The presentation walked-through a variety of scenarios to help explain these issues and provided specific advice on what steps to take for both organizations and the end user.

The Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center have partnered to establish the National Webcast Initiative to develop a series of national webcasts which will examine critical and timely cyber security issues. Embracing the concept that security is everyone's responsibility, these webcasts are available to a broad audience to help raise awareness and knowledge levels. A number of vendors have offered their services at no cost to government, to help develop and deliver the webcasts.

The National Webcast Initiative is also coordinated by the New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination(External Link) and the New York State Forum(External Link) .
