The third webcast in the 2010 National Webcast series was held on June 23rd with a featured presentation on Incident Response. More than 800 individuals representing 48 states, DC, and the U.S. Territory of Virgin Islands and four other countries registered for this event . Opening remarks were provided by Mr. William Pelgrin, Chair of the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, followed by Dr. Phyllis Schneck, Ph.D, VP and Director , Threat Intelligence, Americas, McAfee, Inc., and Mr. Christopher Novak, Managing Principal, Investigative Response , Verizon Business Security Solutions.

Would you know how to respond if a virus shuts down your network and you couldn’t perform your daily operations? What if your databases were compromised and personal, private, or sensitive data was breached? Think of the consequences if your website was disabled or defaced and users couldn’t access your site-or couldn’t trust that the information on the site was accurate? Would you know what to do? These are not just What Ifs... these are real incidents that can happen.

According to a recent Symantec report, 75% of enterprises surveyed reported experiencing some form of cyber attack in 2009; the FBI reports that losses due to cyber crime were nearly $600 million in 2009.

It is imperative to be able to recognize a cyber security incident and respond quickly and efficiently to minimize damage and help prevent future incidents. The webcast provided best practices for developing and implementing strategies for effective incident response. Topics of discussion included:

  • Global Threats
  • Incident Response Policies
  • Why it’s important to have an incident response plan
  • What should be included in a plan?
  • How some plans differ and what might be best for your organization
  • What are common pitfalls?
  • How to pre-plan for the imminent incident:
    • Forensic Data Sources
    • Log Retention
    • Forensic Preservation
    • First Responder
